It’s Monday morning, time to head to the office and do the same thing you do 8 hours a day, five days a week. This is a reality for so many people because the reality of a lot of jobs is that they’re repetitive. You have a specific role in the company and you do it, which means you’re spending a lot of the time repeating the same tasks.
A lot of people will tell you that’s just how the real world is, but they’re wrong. It’s true that there are loads of jobs that involve doing the same thing day in, day out with no variety, but there are also loads of careers that are different every single day. If you’re fed up with your repetitive job, why not consider moving into one of these careers instead?
Start Your Own Business
Do you ever get the feeling that you’re underutilized at work? You look around the office and think, I could do all of these jobs easily. Well, maybe you should think about starting your own business. Some people just aren’t suited to working for somebody else and they’ll be far more successful running things themselves, dealing with the broad strokes rather than a single aspect of the company. When you’re a business owner, no two days are the same. Each morning brings a new crisis or challenge, you’re constantly looking for new opportunities to expand and coming up with new product ideas. There’s never a dull moment and other people will be handling the boring minutiae that drives you mad. It’s always going to be a risk but if you’re desperate for something more exciting and you’ve got some great ideas, it’s worth it.
Become a Pilot
This sounds like a pretty drastic career move and people are often put off because they think it means years and years of expensive training. But in reality, you can get a college degree from an aviation school and learn to be a pilot or even find some other role within the aviation industry. Here is some more info on the best aviation schools and the different degrees that they offer. You can’t get any more varied than flying to a different country every couple of days. You’ll get to travel the world, no two days will be the same, and on top of all that, you’ll be paid handsomely for it.
Working with Kids
If unpredictability is what you want, there’s nobody more unpredictable than kids. There are all sorts of careers that you could choose from. There are the obvious ones like becoming a teacher or a teachers assistant but you could also consider youth work with kids from difficult backgrounds if you want to give something back to the community. If you want to go into teaching, you’ll need the relevant qualifications but if you want to work with kids in another capacity, you’ll just need the relevant safeguarding checks before you can start applying for jobs.
There’s no need to spend your days bored out of your mind in a repetitive job, just try some of these alternatives instead.
An excellent article Mark. Having begun my own business a couple of years ago, I have to say that there are still a few tasks that remain repetitive, but the difference is that I can decide how I want to structure my day, rather than being told how to!
I second that Bethany. There are still repetitive jobs that need doing even when you start your own business, but you find yourself doing them quickly and without complaint when you know that each day will bring about something new. I could never go back to the daily grind of working for others now!
Neither could I Lee. I cannot imagine doing that ever again!
Thank you both. Yes, there are still repetitive jobs to be done when you work for yourself, finance just one of them, but I agree, when you compare these to the many benefits of organizing your own workload, they are tiny in comparison!
